The Role of HDPTP
Instructors will prepare students to respond to local disasters as well as disasters in other parts of the country when NIEHS is activated to respond by OSHA under the National Response Framework’s Worker Safety Health Annex to provide training, technical assistance, safety training to workers, assistance and support in development of training and other assistance. Instructors will build a student training program based on student needs.

NPETE’s HDPTP partners include Barton Community College, Grandview Plaza, KS; Colorado Baptist Disaster Relief (CBDR); Indian River State College and other targeted training partners across the nation, including CERT High School/AmeriCorps based in Wisconsin; Puerto Rico’s PathStone Corporation; and Tribal Colleges led by Saginaw Chippewa College in Michigan.
NPETE’s Disaster Site Response Training for Instructors Train the Trainer Institute (DSRT) includes the OSHA’s Disaster Site Worker 15-hour course offered annually at Indian River State College. Instructors completing DSRT return to their communities to train and prepare others. Each year they train community college students, alternative/technical high school students, Brownfields students, first responders, and community volunteers to respond to local hazmat disasters.
Completion of NPETE’s DSRT pre-qualifies graduates for deployment in disaster situations. The NIEHS Worker Training Program (WTP) partners with labor unions, colleges, and non-profits such as NPETE and Colorado Baptist Disaster Relief (CBDR) to mobilize trained responders in times of disaster. NPETE partners with the CBDR organization, serving all U.S. states, territories and Canada, to provide DSRT Members actual hands-on experience at disaster sites. NPETE, with CBDR provides opportunities for disaster site cleanup response deployment. When assistance is requested, notices will be sent to DSRT Members from NPETE.
