Respiratory Protection Training

The 2 or 2.5-Day Respiratory Protection Training is an NPETE Training Initiative supported by the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Hazardous Waste Worker Training Program (HWWTP).

Respiratory Protection Training

NPETE offers this training to current CCCHST/DSRT Members. This program is designed to prepare up to 18 instructors per year with an intensive, hands-on application of respiratory protection skills.

  • Participants are prepared to certify public and private responders and workers in respiratory protection use.
  • Coursework includes respirator selection, types, fit testing requirements, protection factors, medical evaluation requirements, NIOSH certification/testing requirements, seal checks, cartridge types, PPE inspection, maintenance/care procedures, and compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Participants will also learn respiratory protection program elements, hierarchy of controls, employer/employee responsibilities, required vs. voluntary use, and training requirements.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an NPETE Respiratory Protection Training Certificate.

Training is delivered by NPETE Master Trainers. Successful participants receive an NPETE Respiratory Protection Training Certificate.

NPETE offers this course in conjunction with Barton County Community College at the OSHA Training Institute Education Center in Grandview Plaza, Kansas. This program prepares up to 18 instructors with hands-on respiratory protection training. Apply via online application when available. The following prerequisites must be completed by the deadline stated in the acceptance letter:

  • Must be a current CCCHST/DSRT Member
  • A signed physician’s statement confirming ability to wear respiratory protection
  • Completion of the Respiratory Protection Module in NPETE’s online course

Instructors completing the course return to their communities to train and prepare others in:

  • Respiratory protection selection
  • Using, Maintaining and Caring for Respiratory Protection
  • Small entity compliance with respiratory protection requirements
  • Required vs. voluntary use and program elements
  • Fit testing and seal check procedures
